Iker Casillas made a number of excellent saves
Iker Casillas made a number of excellent saves in a recent Euro 2016 qualifying match against Belarus to help the national team get a 1-0 win.
Spain are no longer the dominant force that they were once involved football a few years ago. They have been struggling to get to the top spot in the group. Slovakia are the unlikely leaders in the group C with Spain trailing them by three points with both teams having played the same number of matches. In this scenario, the 2010 world champions could not afford to drop any more points in the game against Belarus.
A 1-0 win came courtesy of a goal from David Silva right at the stroke of half-time. The Manchester City midfielder’s form may have dropped last season, but he discovered another side to his game. Silva finished the campaign with 12 goals in all competitions for the Premier League team. This is his best return since he started playing professional football in the 2004-05 season with Eibar. Silva appears to have built on this form after scoring only his 23rd goal in 91 appearances for the national team. After the match, though, he praised the performance of underfire goalkeeper Casillas as the primary reason for getting three points.
“Iker’s a great goalkeeper and for us the best. There’s nothing more to say.The Coach has done many great things with us and I’m sure that we’ll achieve a lot more [with him at the helm],” said Silva. His opinions were also backed by Barcelona winger Pedro. “Iker is a great goalkeeper and for us is the best. There is nothing more to say,” said Pedro. Spain have recently suffered high-profile defeats against Germany and Netherlands, but this 1-0 victory helps relieve pressure off national team coach Vicente del Bosque.
