Matthaus says he would pick Leroy Sane ahead of Dembele for Bayern
Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus has said that he would prefer the recruitment of Leroy Sane over Ousmane Dembele at the Bavarian giants. Both Sane and Dembele have been linked with possible moves to the Allianz Arena this summer but Matthaus seems to favour the former due to the player’s close proximity with the German players at Bayern.
Speaking to Bild, Matthaus revealed that Sane is fond with a number of Bayern players, given they play together with the German national team. He added that the former Schalke 04 graduate should prove the perfect fit for Bayern when compared to Dembele, who has yet to make his bow in the Bundesliga, he said: “Sane already knows a lot of Bayern players from the national team and has already played with them. If I had the choice between a German and a French international player, I would take the German at Bayern Munich.”
Bayern have publicly acknowledged that they are interested in a move for Sane but there has been no progress in terms of landing his signature. Even though, the club manage to finalise a transfer fee with Manchester City, they appear to face a stumbling block with the attacker, who appears reluctant to make the return to the Bundesliga.
Sane was a regular starter during the opening half of the previous campaign with the Citizens but the same changed during the backend with Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling preferred for the wide attacking duties. That may continue to remain the case during the opening stages of the forthcoming campaign and it remains to be seen whether Sane will remain patient with the situation.
Manchester City became the first-ever English club to celebrate a domestic treble during the previous campaign and that bettered the domestic double from the 2017/18 season. They have the opportunity to go one better with the Champions League crown, which has eluded them throughout the Sheikh Mansour era.
